Have you tried Femtoo (http://femtoo.com).

Femtoo has been providing a far more advanced version of Google Reader for some time time now. Features include:

- Monitor particular parts of a page
- Parse data and check for particular conditions (share price hit a certain amount etc)
- Premium accounts can create 'low latency' trackers for critical monitoring applications
- Receive notifications via email, Instant Messenger and soon SMS (I think)
- Add a 'widget' to any page to allow people to 'subscribe' to a 'tracker'
- It uses the amazing cQuery (http://cquery.com) Server-side CSS Content Selection Engine
- You can publish 'trackers' to the 'Tracker Library' and anybody can subscribe.

I must have taken the same quiz as David because I know I am 43% addicted to Twitter!

And the people who look down on us for being addicted to social media don't understand its purpose. If I was addicted to Facebook than I would be embarrassed because it's narcissistic and voyeuristic. But being addicted to digg, delicious, and twitter keeps me abreast of technology and science news, the latest software design, and NASA's every move, just to name a few. If people would stop looking down on social media (perhaps because "social" can be misconstrued pejoratively) we could better integrate it into our work and education.

Sadly, where I work I think people think I'm addicted to social media, but that's just because I use it, and it's often where I turn to first for information. There is a difference!

Damien I'm absolutely with you on this. Having Facebook inside the Enterprise could do massive damage to productivity levels but as you say people seem to persist with comparing Facebook with actually very useful tools like internal blogs, wikis and other social media tools.

@thewikiman - blimey I thought there was quite a few of us who did the BA/BSc degree? Yes, I always wanted to be a librarian too so did my undergrad degree at Loughborough. My Masters degree was for me and me alone in something I enjoyed.

6 week placement in the second year though I'd been working in my local library since A levels and then every holiday.

I guess you get a more ongoing feel for the subject tho I did mine jointly with English. Loved it all apart from abstracting and cat&class... I was never going to be a 'traditional librarian' which is why law lib'ship suits me fine.

Hi there, an interesting read clearly you are one of those librarians who decided at quite an early age. I on the other hand, just fell into the job, but it was the best thing that happened to me career-wise. I think you know my feelings on this one James, but I think again this article misses a vital point. By lumping all social software into one big bucket called Web 2.0, they are comparing Facebook with internal blogs/wikis, which to me are worlds apart. Blocking Facebook doesn't mean you're anti-Web 2.0 or social software, just the social networking stuff that really is just social. An internal social network, LinkedIn, LegalOnRamp - all good for business. Facebook, Bebo etc.? Not so much.
